The story...
A woman is waiting. For what? A child! But he doesn't come... One fine day,
a good witch hears her call and gives her a seed in exchange for a
gold coin. The woman plants it: a tiny girl will come out of the flower.

a good witch hears her call and gives her a seed in exchange for a
gold coin. The woman plants it: a tiny girl will come out of the flower.
She decides to call the child Thumbelina, because she is no higher than a thumb. One evening, while Thumbelina is asleep in the walnut shell that serves as her cradle, she is kidnapped by a toad who wants to marry her off to his son. However, she manages to escape. Spotting her from afar, a cockchafer swoops down on her and invites her into his tree; he shows her to his fellows who, disgusted by Thumbelina's appearance, reject him. Disappointed, the cockchafer ends up at the foot of a tree.
